She hurries and puts a finger to my lips. “No, no. Let’s stop there before that first insult drops like a bomb.”

  I grip her wrist and move her hand away from my mouth, pull her against me and press my lips to hers. She gasps, then leans into me and the feel of her in my arms is the most comforting, right thing I’ve ever felt. Her dazed expression and pink lips make me want to whisk her out of here and see how far we can take this. But a nurse walks to the door and calls for Lora.

  “We’ve got some test results back. Shall we?” She gestures to the room. I put a hand on the small of Lora’s back and give her a little push, close behind her as she walks inside. She sits, and I pause at the empty chair beside her.

  She swivels and gives me a questioning look. “What about LA?”

  “Do you want me to stay?”

  “I would never ask you to give up this trip.”

  I take her hand and I’ve never been as sure about anything as I am in this moment. “Forget LA, Lora. There’s no place I’d rather be than here.”
